Start with the stamp, not the brand

Every youth baseball bat carries a certification stamp on the barrel, and the stamp is the first thing an umpire checks. Little League and most rec leagues require the USA Baseball stamp in Tee Ball, Minors and Majors. Travel ball run by USSSA requires the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp, and a USSSA bat is not legal in Little League no matter how expensive it was. High school and, since January 2026, USSSA 14U require BBCOR. A bat with the wrong stamp is not a slightly worse bat; it is a bat your kid cannot use. Then size it: length from height, drop from age

Bat length comes from the kid's height and weight, not the age on the box; drop weight (length minus weight, printed as -12, -10, -8, -5) comes from age and strength. A 7-year-old is usually a 26 or 27 in bat at -12 or -11; a 10-year-old a 29 or 30 in at -10; a 12-year-old a 30 or 31 in at -10 or -8; a 13-year-old moving to USSSA 13U is capped at -8 and to BBCOR at -3. How the category divides

Four kinds of bat live under this hub. Tee ball bats (ages 4–6) carry the USA stamp plus a tee-ball marking and can only be used with tee balls. USA bats (ages 7–12 in Little League) come in -13 to -5 and 2 1/4 or 2 5/8 in barrels. USSSA bats (travel ball, 7U–13U) come in -12 to -5 with the big 2 3/4 in barrel most leagues allow. BBCOR bats (-3) are for 13U-and-up USSSA, Little League Senior and high school. If you already know the league, the faster route is to start from the kid. What decides the price

Construction. A one-piece aluminum alloy bat is the cheapest, is hot out of the wrapper, survives cold weather, and stings on a mis-hit. A two-piece composite costs several times more, needs a break-in of a few hundred swings, cracks if hit below about 60°F, and takes the sting out of a bad swing. The mistake most parents make

Buying the bat to grow into. A bat that is an inch too long or a drop too heavy produces a late swing every at-bat for a whole season, and a kid who cannot get the barrel around stops swinging.
