What an end load actually does

BBCOR fixes the drop at -3, so a 33 in bat weighs 30 oz whichever one you pick. An end load does not add weight; it moves weight. Take the same 30 oz and push more of it out toward the end cap and two things happen at once.

The bat becomes harder to rotate, because the mass sits farther from the hands. That is measured as a higher moment of inertia, and in the batter's box it feels like the bat needs to be started earlier. In exchange, more mass arrives at the point of contact, which is what hitters mean when they say a bat feels like it is doing the work.

Who should not buy one of these

Worth reading before the picks, because this is the most commonly mis-bought category on the site.

• A 13-year-old in his first BBCOR season. He has just taken on eight ounces of bat. Adding an end load on top is how a good 12-year-old hitter becomes a late 13-year-old. Start on the bats on BBCOR bats for a 13-year-old.

• Anyone who cannot pass the hold test. Ten seconds, bat held straight out in front. If the barrel drops with a balanced bat, an end-loaded one is not the answer.
• A hitter who wants to hit for power but does not yet. The bat does not confer the swing. This is the one worth being honest with a 15-year-old about.

The load ladder, in the makers' words

There is no industry standard for these terms, so we quote each maker and rank the ladder from most loaded to least. That is the only defensible way to compare them.

Read that table as a dial rather than a ranking. A hitter stepping up from a balanced bat for the first time is usually better served at the bottom of it, on the Exile or the Chosen One, than at the top.

Half-inch lengths are the real tool

Here is the underused option in this category. Three of these bats are sold in 32.5 and 33.5 in lengths: The Goods, the Exile and the Select PWR. The Chosen One offers 33.5 in. A half inch of length at -3 is half an ounce of weight, most of which sits out at the barrel.

That means a hitter who wants more barrel presence has a cheaper lever than changing bats: go up half an inch in the bat he already swings well. And a hitter who loves an end-loaded bat but is fractionally late can come down half an inch and keep the feel. Very few youth or high-school bats offer this; use it.

Before you buy

• Come down a length before you come down in load. A 32 in end-loaded bat and a 33 in balanced bat can swing similarly; the shorter loaded bat usually plays better.
• One-piece plus end load is the harshest combination here. The Omaha is the most bat for the money and the least forgiving on a mishit. Know which you are buying.
• Alloy barrels need no break-in. Four of these five have alloy barrels, so they are game-ready. Only the Chosen One is a full composite with a break-in period.
• Try before you commit if you can. The Omaha line is in most high-school bat bags, so a borrowed round of batting practice tells you more than any spec sheet.
