About Bat & Bucket

What this site is

Bat & Bucket is the parent's guide to a kid's season: which bat stamp the league requires (USA vs USSSA vs BBCOR, and the softball equivalents), what size bat, glove, helmet and cleat fit which age, and a can't-go-wrong pick for each. Every product is a real, currently sold model whose certification, sizes and construction are quoted from the maker's page, or from a named retailer listing when the maker blocks reading, with the link on the card. As of launch it covers 39 bats, 23 gloves and mitts and 23 helmets, catcher's sets and cups, plus cleats and practice gear, across 52 rankings, head-to-heads and guides, with specs read from 123 maker, governing-body and retailer pages.

It is written for the person who has never held a drop-weight bat: the parent whose kid just signed up for tee ball, the parent whose daughter moved to 10U, and the aunt or grandparent buying a gift. Every season is a new cart, and the mistakes repeat: the wrong stamp, the glove too big to close, the helmet from the team bag. The pages here are built to stop those three before they happen.

Who runs it

Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, an independent publisher. Mike writes every page and is the single byline on the site. Iron Mako Media is the publisher and the entity behind the affiliate accounts; more about it is on its own site.

How the picks are built

From three kinds of source, each linked where it is used: the governing bodies' own rule pages (Little League's bat rules and division ages, USA Baseball's bat FAQ, NOCSAE's helmet and chest-protector standards, USSSA's age rules as reported by a named retailer); the makers' product pages (Rawlings, Easton, Mizuno, Tanner, JUGS, PowerNet, All-Star, Shock Doctor) for certification, sizes, construction and warranty; and named retailer listings (BaseballMonkey, Academy, Headbanger Sports, Zappos) for the brands that block automated reading of their own sites (Wilson, Nike, New Balance, DeMarini, Louisville Slugger, Under Armour, adidas). Where a figure is not published, the card says so rather than guessing. The rubric and its weights are public on the methodology page.

What we refuse to claim

• Gear we claim to have tested: none. No page implies otherwise. Scores are compiled from published specs, certification lists and sizing charts, and the methodology page says exactly how.
• We don't print Amazon prices. They change daily; every button says “Check price on Amazon” until a live, dated feed supplies a number, and a number older than 48 hours would disappear automatically.
• We don't quote Amazon star ratings or review counts, and we don't mark our own scores up as product ratings in search-engine data.
• We don't print a certification or a spec we couldn't read on a maker or retailer page. Where a listing does not print the stamps (some DeMarini and Slugger bats), the card says so and tells you to check the barrel.
• We don't list credentials, awards or testimonials, because there aren't any to list. League rules are quoted from the league, not from us.

How the site is funded
