Editorial policy

Independence

Bat & Bucket is published by Iron Mako Media and funded by affiliate commissions, mostly through Amazon Associates. No brand pays for placement, no brand reviews a page before it runs, no maker has sent us gear, and no product is ranked higher because it earns more. The rubric is fixed before scoring and published with its weights on the methodology page.

How products are chosen

We start from the governing bodies' approved lists (USA Baseball's USABat list, Little League's bat rules, NOCSAE-certified helmets and chest protectors) and from the youth lines of the makers that publish real specs (Rawlings, Easton, Mizuno, Wilson, All-Star, Tanner, JUGS, PowerNet, SKLZ, Shock Doctor) plus the cleat brands kids actually ask for (Nike, New Balance, adidas, Under Armour, Mizuno). We exclude products with no maker or named-retailer page we can read, because we can't verify their certification, sizes or construction, and products the maker no longer lists. Every product must be currently sold on Amazon, which is where the buy buttons point.

Sourcing

• Certifications and specs come from the maker's product page, or a named retailer listing when the maker blocks reading, with the date read; each spec on a card links to its source, and the site will not build if one is missing.
• League rules are quoted from the governing body's own page (Little League, USA Baseball, NOCSAE) with the date read. Rules pages carry a “league rules as of” note. We never paraphrase a rule from memory.
• Sizing comes from the maker's published table, or a named retailer's chart, reproduced with attribution. Where a page adds a rule of thumb of its own (the 20-second bat test), it says so.
• Prices are never printed as Amazon prices. They change daily; buttons read “Check price on Amazon” until a live, dated feed exists. Where a budget page needs a tier, it uses the maker's list price with the date it was read.

What we don't claim

We haven't swung, worn or fitted the gear on this site and we don't say we have. We don't list credentials, coaching titles, awards, testimonials or reader reviews, and we don't mark our scores up as product ratings in structured data. We don't give medical advice. Where a page ever describes first-hand use of a specific product, it will say what was done and for how long.

Writing and tools

Pages are written and edited by Iron Mako Media. Software is used for research and drafting; every figure is checked against its linked source before it is published, and the author is responsible for every sentence.

Corrections and updates

If a spec, rule, size or claim is wrong, email mike@blackironathletics.com or use the contact form. We re-check the source, fix the page, and record the change in that page's “Corrections & updates” log. If the source changed (a new model year, a rule change such as USSSA's 14U BBCOR requirement, a withdrawn certification), we update the page and note the date. Every roundup and rules page is re-read before each spring season, and the “2026” in a title is refreshed when the page is.

Style

US English, plain punctuation, no exclamation points. Numerals with units and a source. Written for the parent and the gift buyer who do not know the category; we skip the lifestyle copy and lead with the decision.
