By drop and age
The drop is length minus weight; a bigger negative number is a lighter bat. USA Baseball sets no drop limit, so the drop is entirely about what the kid can swing. These bands are a starting point; the size chart refines by height and weight.

How these were ranked
Every bat here carries the USA Baseball mark per the maker's spec page or, where the maker's site blocks automated reading (DeMarini, Louisville Slugger, Marucci), per the retailer listing that names the certification. That is the 30% axis and every pick scores full marks on it; the ranking is then decided by swing-weight coverage (does the line offer the drops a growing kid needs?), the maker's own description of sting control, alloy-vs-composite durability for a rec season, and value. The rubric weights are published on the methodology page.
What the USA stamp means for your kid
The USABat standard is deliberately wood-like: USA Baseball's FAQ says the bat's coefficient of restitution “mirrors a wood bat.” Two things follow. First, a USA bat will never hit like the USSSA bat the travel kids swing, and that is by design, so do not chase “pop” in this category; chase fit. Second, because the performance ceiling is fixed, the differences between a premium USA bat and a budget one are feel, sting, weight distribution and durability, not distance. Little League requires the mark in Majors and below and prohibits 1.15 BPF bats; the rules are quoted on Little League bat rules.

- The stamp: oval USA Baseball logo on the taper. Photograph it.
- The length: knob on the ground at the kid's side, barrel to the hip. Rawlings' own age table runs 26–28 in for 8–9, 28–29 in for 10, 30–31 in for 11–12 (on the size chart).
- Alloy vs composite: alloy for a first season, cold spring practice and the batting cage; composite for the kid who hits a lot and complains about sting. See alloy vs composite.
- The next division: a 12-year-old in Majors moves to Intermediate at 13, where USA or BBCOR is accepted. Buying a -8 or -5 USA bat at 12 is often the right call; buying a -10 for one season is not.

Gear we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they swung every bat on the list in a lab. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: check each bat against the governing bodies' certification rules and the maker's stated stamp; compile sizing from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; read the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type); and read the complaint patterns in retailer reviews for the “skip it if” line. Every figure links to where it came from.
