Molded until the league says metal

Youth baseball cleats come in two kinds of sole: molded (rubber or TPU studs, part of the shoe) and metal (screw-in or fixed spikes). Little League prohibits metal spikes in the Major division and below, and most rec and travel leagues follow; metal arrives at 13U or Intermediate, and even then a molded cleat is legal everywhere. Size it twice a season

Kids' shoe sizes restart at 1 after 13 (a 13 little-kid shoe is followed by a 1 big-kid shoe), brands run small or narrow, and a foot grows a size between March and June. The soccer-cleat question

Every tee ball parent asks it, and the answer is usually yes: soccer cleats are molded with no toe stud and are fine in most youth baseball leagues. Football cleats have a toe stud and are the ones to avoid. If the kid already owns soccer cleats, wear them for the first season and buy baseball cleats when he asks. Wide feet, heel pain

Most youth cleats come in one width, and Nike's and New Balance's run narrow by the retailers' own notes. What decides the price, and what to ignore

Cushioning and the upper. The cheapest youth cleats have an unnamed foam sliver and a synthetic upper that wipes clean; the step-up models (New Balance 4040v8, Mizuno Lightrevo) have a named midsole. For a kid who plays two days a week, the cheap cleat is right; for the kid who plays five, the midsole matters. Ignore the pro signature and the colorway. If you only read one page

Read the sizing guide, measure both feet in the afternoon, and buy a molded cleat a half size up on the brands the retailer says run small. For a 4- to 7-year-old that is a Little Kids size from the cheap end of the rankings; for an 8- to 12-year-old who plays a lot, a Big Kids size with a named midsole. Expect to buy again in June. If the kid already owns soccer cleats, wear those for the first season and spend the money on the glove instead; the cleat that matters is the one that fits in May, not the one that looked best in March.
