New Balance 4040v8 vs Nike Trout 9: the two cleats on every youth field
Walk any 10U dugout and half the cleats are one of these two. They are the same price bracket, the same rubber molded legality and the same low cut, and they are bought for opposite reasons: one for the midsole underneath it, the other for the name on the side. Here is what the listings actually say, including the fit warning that applies to both.

The verdict
Midsole against outsole plate
A youth baseball cleat does very little running. What it does is stand — in the field, in the box, on the bases, on packed dirt, for several hours at a stretch. That makes the layer between the foot and the studs more important than it is in almost any other shoe a kid owns, and it is the one spec that genuinely separates these two.
New Balance lists a full-length FuelCell midsole on the 4040v8. Full-length matters: plenty of cleats in this price range put a sliver of foam under the heel and nothing under the forefoot, which is where a kid stands when he is waiting on a pitch. The retailer description also notes a de-bossed synthetic upper that is durable and easy to clean, which is a small thing until the first muddy Saturday.
Nike's Keystone listing goes the other way and describes the outsole: a plated outsole for placement on soft ground, with rubber molded studs. That is a traction claim rather than a comfort one, and on a soft spring infield it is a real one. What the listing does not publish is a midsole technology, which is a fair reflection of where the Keystone sits in Nike's line — it is the entry version of the Trout 9, and the Pro MCS above it buys a different plate rather than more foam.
Fit: both run narrow, and what to do about it
This is the part that decides more returns than anything above. The retailer note on the New Balance line is explicit: New Balance cleats “can be a little smaller and narrower than your standard athletic shoe”, with the suggestion to consider a half size up. Nike's youth lasts are also commonly reported as narrow, and the same caution applies.
So the honest comparison is that neither of these is the cleat for a genuinely wide-footed kid, and the choice between them should not be made on a size chart alone. Three practical rules:
- Order a half size up in either, unless you can try them on. That is the retailer's own advice on New Balance and it is the safe default on Nike too.
- Measure in the afternoon. Feet swell during the day and a cleat fitted at 9 a.m. is tight by the third inning.
- Leave a thumb's width at the toe. A cleat fitted exactly is a cleat he outgrows in April.
If your kid is wide, neither of these is the first place to look — that is a different list, on best youth cleats for wide feet. And the whole sizing method, including the Little Kid to Big Kid transition that catches everyone out, is on youth cleat sizing guide.
Legality: a non-issue for both
Both of these are molded cleats, which means both are legal everywhere in youth baseball. Little League's own help centre is clear that metal spikes are not permitted below a certain level of play, and the practical effect is that anything with a metal stud is off the table for most of the ages this site covers.
That is worth stating plainly because the shelf confuses it. The Trout 9 and the 4040 both exist in metal versions for older players, with near-identical names and near-identical photography. Check the word “molded”, “Keystone”, “RM” or “TPU” in the title before you buy, because the metal version of the same shoe will get your kid sent off the field. The full rule is on molded vs metal cleats.
What wears out first on each
On both shoes the answer is the same, and it is not the studs. Youth cleats die at the toe, where a kid drags it on his back foot through every swing and every pitch, and at the seam where the upper meets the sole on the inside of the front foot.
The 4040v8's synthetic upper is described by the retailer as durable and easy to clean, which helps with the second of those. Neither shoe publishes a toe-drag reinforcement, so if your kid is a pitcher or a heavy toe-dragger, expect to be looking at the toe by mid-season on either. A toe guard is a cheap aftermarket fix and a legitimate one.
The honest expectation for a youth cleat of either brand is one season, sometimes two, and the limiting factor is usually the foot growing rather than the shoe failing. That is the single best argument against spending up: the Pro MCS costs more than the Keystone for the same legality and the same twelve months.
Which cleat for which kid
| The kid | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plays two or three times a week, all season | New Balance 4040v8 | The only one of these that publishes a full-length midsole |
| You need to try them on this weekend | Nike Trout 9 Keystone | Stocked in Little Kids and Big Kids sizes almost everywhere |
| One rec season a year, growing fast | New Balance 3000v7 | The same last for less money and less midsole |
| Eleven to thirteen, wants the pro-model look | Nike Trout 9 Pro MCS | The MCS plate, in Big Kids sizes, at a premium |
| Wide feet | Neither, without trying them on | Both lines are reported narrow |
If the kid has a strong opinion and the fit works, let him have it. A 10-year-old who likes his cleats puts them on without an argument twice a week, which is worth more than a midsole spec. The wider ranked field is on best youth baseball cleats.

How we picked these
Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age
Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
