Which bat for which kid

A 10U roster runs from an 8-year-old in her second season to a 10-year-old who already hits line drives, and no one bat fits both. The buckets, in the parent's terms:

• She just moved up from 8U and is small for the team: the Fire Fly -12 or the Spryte -12. The -12 keeps the bat light; the two-piece composite means a ball off the end of the bat does not sting her hands into a flinch.
• She is 10, average size, and plays travel ball: the Ghost Advanced -11. Easton sells it in four drops (-11, -10, -9, -8), so the same bat model follows her to 12U and 14U; buy the -11 now and the -10 later.
• First season, not sure she will stick with it: the Ghost Youth -11. One-piece aluminum, the thin handle small hands like, a fraction of the composite price. It will sting on a cold morning; that is the trade.
• Strong 10-year-old, tight budget: the Topaz -10. Same alloy build as the Ghost Youth with a little more barrel weight.

The 10U bat rule, quoted

League ages: Little League's Minor League is 5–11 and its Little League/Majors division is 9–12; a 10U travel team is age 10 and under on the sanctioning body's cutoff date. Ask the coach which body sanctions your league, then look for that body's mark on the barrel. The fastpitch bat size chart covers length once the stamp is settled.

Why -11 and -12 for 10U

Fastpitch drops run lighter than baseball drops at the same age. A 10-year-old in baseball is often handed a -10; the same-size girl in fastpitch is usually better off in a -11 or -12, because the pitch arrives on a rising plane from 35 feet (Little League Minor) or 40 feet (Majors) and rewards bat speed over mass. The rule of thumb this site uses: if she can hold the bat straight out by the knob for 20 seconds without the barrel dipping, the weight is fine; if it dips, go a drop lighter or an inch shorter. Before you buy

• Stamp first. Ask the coach which body sanctions the league. Little League only requires the BPF 1.20 print and the 2 1/4 in barrel; USA Softball, USSSA and NSA travel leagues each want their own mark.
• Length from the chart, not the age. A 10-year-old at 4'5" and 65 lb lands on a 29 in bat in the BaseballMonkey fastpitch table; at 4'9" and 85 lb, 30 in. See the size chart.
• Composite needs warm weather and a break-in. Easton's composites carry a 1-year warranty; the maker's break-in guidance is a few hundred soft-toss swings, rotating the barrel. Do not hit a composite below about 60°F; the alloys do not care.
• -12 for a small 9-year-old, -11 for a 10-year-old, -10 only for a strong 10-year-old. When in doubt, lighter. A bat she can swing fast beats a bat she can barely get around.
