Start with the drop, not the brand

Fastpitch drops run lighter than baseball drops at the same age, and the progression is fairly settled: -13 and -12 at 6U and 8U, -12 and -11 at 10U, -11 and -10 at 12U, and -10 to -8 from 14U up. Length comes from height and weight, not from age.

Get those two right and the rest is preference. Get them wrong and no amount of barrel technology helps: a 32 in bat on a 4 ft 8 in twelve-year-old is the most common mistake in the sport. The three measuring methods are on the fastpitch bat size chart.

Balanced or end-loaded

Two bats of the same drop and length can feel completely different depending on where the weight sits. Fastpitch makers are better than baseball makers at publishing this, and one of them publishes it per drop.

If she hits for power and wants the barrel to feel heavy through contact, the end-loaded drops are ranked on best fastpitch bats for power hitters. For everyone else, balanced is the default and the Halo is the cheapest way to get a stated one at every drop.

Certification, and the college footnote

Fastpitch certification is messier than baseball's. Little League Softball requires a 2 1/4 inch barrel and the BPF 1.20 print under Rule 1.10, with a 33 inch length cap; USA Softball and USSSA leagues each want their own marks. Easton and Rawlings both use the phrase “All Association” for a bat they consider approved across the sanctioning bodies, and that is the wording we quote rather than claiming a stamp we have not seen on the barrel.

Every bat here carries a certification line printed by its maker, so that axis scores full marks and the order comes from drop and length coverage, the maker's account of sting control, durability across a season, and value. The weights are published on the methodology page. We have not swung these bats and do not claim to have.

The 2024 Ghost Advanced showed out of stock and the 2027 Marucci Asura RISE was sold out at the retailer we could read, so neither is ranked; the DeMarini Spryte and Louisville Slugger Aura are ranked on the division pages rather than here because both are -12 only.

Before you buy

• Composite means a break-in and a temperature rule. Five of these seven are composites: 150 to 400 warm-weather swings with real balls, rotating the barrel a quarter turn each swing, never in the cold. The two alloys need none of it.
• Check the 33 inch cap. Little League Softball caps bat length at 33 in under Rule 1.10, and several of these bats are sold in 34.
• Read the drop footnote if college is the horizon. The -11 drops on the Ghost OG, Ghost Unlimited and Halo are not approved for college play, per the makers.
