Easton Ghost vs Louisville Slugger Kryo2: the two fastpitch flagships, compared

These are the two bats in every 12U and travel fastpitch dugout, they cost about the same, and both are composites with a named anti-vibration joint. The real difference is what each maker tells you about swing weight: Easton publishes it drop by drop, Louisville Slugger calls every drop balanced. Four listings compared, with every figure quoted from the page it came from.

The verdict

Certification: check the stamp your league names

Fastpitch is not like baseball, where one wrong stamp gets a bat pulled at the plate. There is no single fastpitch standard; there are several sanctioning bodies, and a flagship bat is normally approved across them. But the two makers describe that differently, and the difference is worth reading before you order.

  • Easton uses its own phrase, “All Association,” for approval across the fastpitch bodies, and notes on both Ghost pages that the -11 is not approved for college play.
  • Louisville Slugger lists the Kryo2 as approved by ISA, NSA, USA Softball and USSSA — the bodies named individually.

For a 10U or 12U rec or travel player, either covers you. If your daughter is in high school, confirm the specific sanctioning body your state association uses before you spend $450, and avoid a -11 if college is anywhere in the conversation. The wider picture on how fastpitch gear differs from the baseball equivalent is on softball vs baseball gear.

Drops and lengths

On paper this is a tie, and that is the honest result. Both lines cover the full fastpitch range.

BatDrops offeredLengthsBarrelPieces
Ghost OG-11, -10, -9, -829-34 in2 1/4 in, Double BarrelTwo-piece composite
Ghost Unlimited-11, -10, -9, -829-34 in2 1/4 in, Double Barrel EXTOne-piece composite
Kryo2-11, -10, -9, -8Not published on the listings read2 1/4 in, GO-EX+Two-piece composite

One practical note: Easton publishes its six lengths and Louisville Slugger's listings do not, which means you should confirm the length is in stock before you commit to the Kryo2. The length question — how long a bat a given height and weight should be swinging — is answered on the fastpitch bat size chart, and it matters more than any technology on this page.

Swing weight: the one real difference

This is the whole comparison. Two bats of the same drop and the same length can feel completely different depending on where the weight sits, and these two makers take opposite positions on telling you.

  • Ghost OG. Easton's chart labels the -11 and -10 balanced. It does not label the -9 and -8, which is itself informative: the lighter drops are the forgiving ones.
  • Ghost Unlimited. Easton prints it outright: “-11/-10 BALANCED & -9/-8 END LOADED.” That is the clearest swing-weight statement any bat maker on this site publishes.
  • Kryo2. “Balanced Swing Weight,” full stop, at every drop. There is no end-loaded Kryo2.

So the decision tree is short. A hitter who is growing into more barrel and wants to feel it should buy a Ghost Unlimited -9 or -8, because Easton has told you what that bat does. A hitter who is moving from -11 to -10 to -9 over three seasons and does not want the bat to feel like a different object each spring should buy the Kryo2, because balanced at every drop is exactly that promise. A hitter who just wants the most forgiving bat on a mishit should buy the two-piece Ghost OG.

Double Barrel vs GO-EX+

Both makers name their barrel system and their joint, and neither publishes a figure you can compare. Here is what each one actually claims.

  • Easton Ghost OG. A patented Double Barrel — a barrel inside a barrel — with the ConneXion connection joining barrel to handle. Two-piece composite.
  • Easton Ghost Unlimited. Double Barrel EXT, an inch longer than the standard Double Barrel, built as a one-piece composite with Sonic Comp Max, a VRS1 internal connection point, an ultra-thin 29/32 in handle and a concave end cap.
  • Louisville Slugger Kryo2. A two-piece GO-EX+ barrel, a two-piece VTX connection, an XPND performance end cap and the LS Pro Comfort Grip on the handle.

The structural difference that actually matters here is pieces, not names. The Ghost OG and the Kryo2 are both two-piece bats, which puts a joint between the barrel and the hands and is why both are described as low-sting. The Ghost Unlimited is a one-piece, which sends more feedback into the hands — the trade you make for the longer barrel. If you want that argument laid out properly, it is the same one as in baseball: one-piece vs two-piece bats.

Which hitter each one suits

  • An 8U player. Neither. Nothing at that age needs a $450 bat; a one-piece alloy -11 or -12 is the right purchase. See best fastpitch bats for 8U.
  • A 10U player whose parents want the flagship. The Kryo2 -11 or the Ghost OG -11. Both balanced, both two-piece, both forgiving.
  • A 12U contact hitter. The Ghost OG -10. The Double Barrel is the most forgiving feel in fastpitch and a contact hitter gets more out of forgiveness than out of barrel mass. More context on best 12U fastpitch bats.
  • A 12U hitter who will change drops next season. The Kryo2. Balanced at -11, -10, -9 and -8 means the only thing that changes is the number on the barrel.
  • A 14U or high-school power hitter. The Ghost Unlimited -9 or -8, which Easton states is end loaded. See best fastpitch bats for power hitters.
  • A slap hitter. Either, in a balanced drop. A slapper needs the bat to start and stop quickly, which rules out the end-loaded Unlimited drops and nothing else here.
  • A player with college in view. Not a -11 in either line — Easton states its -11 is not approved for college play, and that is a reason to buy a -10 now rather than replace it in a year.

Both are composites, so both have rules

Every bat on this page is composite, which means two things. First, it needs a break-in: a few hundred swings at reduced effort off a tee and in soft toss, rotating the barrel, before full-effort hitting. Second, it must not be swung cold. Composite stiffens below roughly 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the barrel cracks — and no maker warranties that. Both carry a one-year warranty.

The method is written out on how to break in a composite bat and the temperature rule on composite bats in cold weather. Both apply identically to fastpitch. If your season opens in March in the north, the honest answer is that an alloy bat is the better buy and neither of these is.

Side by side

The two two-piece flagships, which is the comparison most parents are actually making. Easton figures from easton.com; Kryo2 figures from the BaseballMonkey listing read 21 October 2026. A dash means the figure is not on the cited page.

The scores land within a tenth of each other, and that is the right answer: these are two very similar bats sold at the same price. Buy the one whose published swing-weight story matches your hitter, or the one that is cheaper the week you order. Where both sit against the rest of the field is on best fastpitch softball bats.

The two extremes of the comparison: the one-piece Ghost Unlimited, whose -9 and -8 Easton calls end loaded, against the lightest balanced Kryo2.

These two are not really competitors — they are the opposite ends of the same decision. One is built to put mass behind the ball for a strong 14U hitter; the other is built to be the lightest flagship a 10U player can swing. That the prices are the same is a fact about fastpitch pricing, not a judgment about either bat.

How we picked these

Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age

Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked

Is the Easton Ghost or the Louisville Slugger Kryo2 better?
They are close enough that published swing weight should decide. Easton labels its swing weight drop by drop, so a Ghost Unlimited -9 is openly end loaded and a Ghost OG -10 is openly balanced. The Kryo2 is listed as balanced at every drop. Buy the Ghost for a hitter with a clear profile and the Kryo2 for a hitter who will change drops and wants the feel to stay the same.
What drop Ghost or Kryo2 should a 12U player use?
A -10 for most 12U hitters and a -11 for a smaller one. Both lines offer both. Match length to her height and weight using the fastpitch bat size chart before you worry about drop, because a bat that is too long is a worse problem than a bat that is slightly too heavy.
Is the Louisville Slugger Kryo2 approved for USA Softball and USSSA?
The retailer listings for the 2027 Kryo2 state ISA, NSA, USA and USSSA approval. Easton uses its own phrase, “All Association,” for the Ghost line and notes that the -11 is not approved for college play. If your daughter plays high school ball, confirm the body your state association names before you buy either.
What is the difference between the Ghost OG and the Ghost Unlimited?
Pieces and barrel length. The OG is a two-piece composite with the standard Double Barrel; the Unlimited is a one-piece composite with a Double Barrel EXT an inch longer. The two-piece OG sends less feedback into the hands; the one-piece Unlimited is the power hitter's bat and is the one Easton publishes an end-loaded designation for.
Does the Kryo2 come in an end-loaded version?
Not on the listings read for this page: all four drops are described as “Balanced Swing Weight.” If you want barrel mass in a fastpitch bat, that is the argument for the Ghost Unlimited -9 or -8 instead.
Do the Ghost and the Kryo2 need breaking in?
Yes, both are composite. Plan on a few hundred swings at reduced effort off a tee and in soft toss, rotating the barrel between swings, before full-effort hitting — and keep either bat out of the cage below roughly 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
