What changes at 12U

Two things, and both push toward a heavier bat. The first is the ball. Little League Softball's Rule 1.09 uses an 11 inch ball in Tee Ball and Minor divisions and a 12 inch ball in Majors and above, so a 12U player in Majors is hitting a bigger, heavier ball than she was at 10U. A bigger ball off a whippy light bat goes nowhere.

The second is pitching. By 12U the pitchers throw hard enough that bat speed alone stops being the whole game; barrel mass starts to matter. This is why the drop progression in fastpitch runs -13 and -12 at 8U, -12 and -11 at 10U, and -11 and -10 at 12U.

If your daughter is in her first or second season rather than her fifth, none of that applies yet: keep her on a lighter drop, and look at the 10U bats page instead, which ranks the same bats for a lighter swing.

Drop and length for a 12-year-old

The measuring methods (three of them, including the hip test and the arm-extension test) are on the fastpitch bat size chart. Use one of them before you choose from this list, because a 32 inch bat on a 4 ft 8 in twelve-year-old is the most common mistake in this division.

The stamp your 12U league requires

Fastpitch certification is messier than baseball's. Little League Softball requires a 2 1/4 inch barrel and the BPF 1.20 print under Rule 1.10, with a 33 inch length cap. USA Softball and USSSA leagues want their own marks. Easton uses the term “All Association” for a bat it considers approved across the sanctioning bodies, and that is the wording we quote rather than claiming a specific stamp we have not seen.

Certification fit is 30% of the score, and the four bats whose makers print a certification line score full marks; the two retailer-sourced bats are marked down on that axis and their write-ups say why. The rest of the order is swing-weight coverage for a 12-year-old, the maker's own account of sting control, durability across a season, and value. The weights are published on the methodology page. Before you buy

• Composite means a break-in and a temperature rule. The Ghost Advanced, Fire Fly, Aura and Spryte are all composites: 150 to 400 warm-weather swings with real balls, rotating the barrel a quarter turn each swing, and never in the cold. The Ombre and Eclipse are alloy and need none of that.
• Check the 33 inch cap. Little League Softball caps bat length at 33 inches. No 12U player needs 33, but it is worth knowing the rule exists.
• Read Easton's own drop notice on the Ghost Advanced. Easton states the -11 is not approved for college play. Irrelevant at 12U, relevant if you are buying a bat to last to high school.
• Do not buy up two drops at once. Going from a -12 to a -10 in one season is a two-ounce jump at the same length; most 12U hitters should step to -11 first.
• Ask what the team swings. At 12U, coaches often have strong views, and a bat she can borrow to try before you order is worth more than any spec sheet.
