Little League bat rules (2026): what is legal in every division, quoted

League rules as of Sep 21, 2026. Every rule on this page was read from the governing body's own page on that date, and each is linked. Leagues and tournaments change bat and gear rules between seasons (USSSA's 14U bat rule changed on January 1, 2026): confirm on the linked page and with your league before you buy, and tell us if a rule has changed.

The rule, quoted

Are USSSA bats legal in Little League?

No. The 1.15 BPF (USSSA) mark is not a USA Baseball mark, and BaseballMonkey's summary of the Little League rule states plainly: “All BPF – 1.15 bats are prohibited.” This is the single most expensive mistake in youth baseball: a USSSA flagship bought for a Little League Majors player is a bat the umpire removes at the plate. The reverse is fine: USA bats are accepted at USSSA events. If your kid plays both, the USA bat is the one to own first. The full comparison is on USA vs USSSA vs BBCOR.

Cal Ripken, PONY, Babe Ruth, Dixie and the rest

USA Baseball lists the organizations that adopted the USABat standard: Little League, PONY, NABF, Dizzy Dean, Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken, AABC, DYB (Dixie Youth), DBB and NFHS. In practice that means a USA-marked bat is the rec-league bat nationwide. Where the leagues differ is at the 13–14 transition: Babe Ruth's 13–16 division accepts USA or BBCOR with a 2 5/8 in barrel per BaseballMonkey's summary, mirroring Little League's Intermediate and Junior rule. Travel organizations (USSSA, Perfect Game, most local tournament series) run their own bat rules. Always read the tournament's page, not the league's, before a weekend event.

The approved bat list

USA Baseball publishes the approved bat list and the approved tee ball list at usabat.com (linked in Sources). The practical test at the field is the mark itself: an oval USA Baseball logo on the taper, and for tee ball bats the “Only for use with approved tee balls” text. Wood bats are approved under USABat with or without the mark if they are solid one-piece; multi-piece and composite wood bats need the mark.

When a legal bat becomes illegal

Damage: dented, cracked, misshaped, or a rattle or loose end cap. Removed from play.
Alteration: rolled, shaved, or repainted. Removed from play, and in most leagues a suspension.
Worn mark: if the certification mark is not legible, the bat cannot be used. Photograph the stamp in March.
Decertification: USA Baseball and USSSA occasionally decertify a model; a stamp does not save it. Check the lists if a bat is a few years old.
The ring: a bat that cannot pass through the league's barrel ring for the division is out.

What bat is legal for Little League Majors?

A bat with the USA Baseball mark and a barrel of 2 5/8 inches or less. No USSSA (1.15 BPF) bats. BBCOR is not listed for Majors; it becomes an option at Intermediate.

Can a 13-year-old use a BBCOR bat in Little League?

Yes, in Intermediate (50/70) and Junior, where “USA Baseball marking or BBCOR marking” is acceptable. Senior requires BBCOR.

Is a 2 3/4 barrel legal in Little League?

No. Little League caps the barrel at 2 5/8 inches through Junior. The 2 3/4 in barrels are USSSA bats.

Does a tee ball bat need the USA mark?

Yes, since January 1, 2018: the USA Baseball mark and the accompanying “Only for use with approved tee balls” text. See the tee ball bat picks.

How is league age determined?

Little League defines a baseball player's league age as the child's actual age on August 31 of the current year (softball uses December 31 of the previous year), and publishes annual age charts and a calculator.
