Best BBCOR bats for a 13-year-old

Does a 13-year-old need BBCOR yet?

Often not, and this is worth checking before you spend anything. At 13 a player may be in Little League Intermediate (50/70) or Junior League, where BBCOR is accepted alongside USA bats; in a USSSA 13U programme, where the -5 USSSA bat is usual; or already on a high-school feeder team where BBCOR is required. Three different answers.

The trigger for buying BBCOR is a rule, not an age. If his league or his next tryout requires the BBCOR .50 mark, buy one. If the league still accepts a -5 or -8 and he is small for 13, another season on a lighter bat is very often the better baseball decision. The -3 problem, in ounces

BBCOR fixes the drop at -3. That is the whole difficulty of this purchase, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

There is no lighter BBCOR option: the standard forbids it. The only lever you have is length, which is why the length table below matters more than any barrel technology on this page.

What length for a 13-year-old

Use the same two tests that work at every age. Knob on the ground beside his foot: the end of the barrel should reach his hip. Then hold the bat out straight in front of him for ten seconds; if the barrel drops, the bat is too heavy for him right now. On a -3 that second test does real work. How these were ranked

Certification is 30% of the score and all five bats carry the BBCOR mark per the maker's own spec block, so the order is set by the other four axes: swing weight and available lengths for a 13-year-old, the maker's account of sting control, durability over a season of cage work, and value. The Tango sits above the Hype Fire deliberately. The composite is the better bat and we say so in its write-up; it is not the better purchase for a 13-year-old who may be on a 33 inch bat in eighteen months. That is a value judgment, and value is 15% of the rubric.

Before you buy

• Confirm the rule in writing. Intermediate and Junior League accept both USA and BBCOR; a USSSA 13U team may want a -5 instead. The rules by division are quoted on Little League bat rules.
• Alloy first, composite later. A one-piece alloy is game-ready, survives cold weather and costs a third as much. The argument for composite is hand sting, and it only becomes a real argument once he is hitting every day.
• Do not buy long. The temptation at 13 is a 32 inch bat he will “grow into.” At -3 that is 29 ounces of bat he cannot get around.
• A composite needs breaking in. 150 to 400 warm-weather swings, rotating the barrel a quarter turn each swing, and never against dimpled cage balls. See alloy vs composite.
• High school is the horizon. BBCOR is the standard for high school and college play, so a bat bought at 13 in the right length can genuinely last three seasons, unlike every youth bat before it.
