DeMarini Zen vs Louisville Slugger Supra: the two travel-ball composites, compared
These are the two bats you see most in a 12U travel dugout, they cost about the same, and both are two-piece composites with a named anti-vibration joint. The real difference is which drops each one is sold in and which stamp you need. Four listings compared, with every figure quoted from the page it came from.

The verdict
Start with the stamp, not the bat
Before either of these is the right bat, it has to be the right certification. Both models exist in two versions and they are not interchangeable.
- USSSA (the 2 3/4 in barrel versions on this page) for travel ball and most USSSA-sanctioned leagues. A USSSA bat is not legal in Little League.
- USA Baseball (the -10 versions) for Little League and most rec leagues on the USABat standard. Sold in one drop only for both models.
If you do not know which your kid's league uses, stop here and read USA vs USSSA vs BBCOR and the Little League bat rules. A $400 bat with the wrong stamp is a $400 bat the umpire hands back.
Drops: where they genuinely differ
On the USSSA side both bats are sold in -10, -8 and -5, which covers roughly 9U through 13U. On the USA side both are -10 only. That is the whole availability picture, and it means the drop decision is about your kid rather than about the brand.
| Version | Drops offered | Barrel | Swing weight as published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zen USSSA | -10, -8, -5 | 2 3/4 in | “-10 balanced; -8 heavier swing weight; -5 for hitters preparing for BBCOR” |
| Supra USSSA | -10, -8, -5 | 2 3/4 in | “Balanced” |
| Zen USA | -10 only | 2 5/8 in | “Balanced” |
| Supra USA | -10 only | 2 5/8 in | “Balanced” |
One rule worth knowing before you buy a -10 for a 13-year-old: USSSA caps 13U at -8 or heavier, so a 12-year-old buying in the autumn should usually buy the -8 he will need in the spring rather than the -10 he has outgrown. The whole drop ladder is on bat drop weight explained.
Dark Matter vs APX, Damplify vs VCX3
Both makers name their barrel composite and their joint, and neither publishes a number you can compare. So here is what each actually claims, and nothing more.
- DeMarini Zen. Dark Matter composite barrel, a Direct Connection between barrel and handle, a Damplify knob and an Anomaly end cap. Two separate vibration-management features, at the joint and at the knob.
- Slugger Supra. APX composite barrel on the USSSA version and EKO composite on the USA version, with the VCX3 vibration control connection and an XPND end cap. One named damping system, at the joint.
If sting is the deciding factor for you, note that the Zen puts damping in two places rather than one. That is a difference in design, not a measured difference in outcome, and we are not going to claim otherwise.
Which hitter each one suits
- A 9- or 10-year-old in travel ball. Either, in -10. This is the drop both are balanced in, and the bats are close enough that price on the day should decide.
- A strong 11- or 12-year-old moving to -8. The Zen. DeMarini describes the -8 as having a heavier swing weight, which is what a kid with real bat speed is after.
- A 12-year-old who does not want the feel to change. The Supra, which is listed as balanced at every drop, so dropping from -10 to -8 changes the weight but not the distribution.
- A 13-year-old headed for BBCOR at 14. The Zen -5, which DeMarini positions explicitly as the BBCOR transition. Then read when does my kid need a BBCOR bat, because that purchase is coming.
- A Little Leaguer. The USA version of either, in -10, and nothing else.
Both are composites, so both have rules
Two-piece composite bats need a break-in period of swings at reduced effort, and they should not be swung in cold weather: composite gets brittle and the barrel cracks. That applies equally to both bats here and it is the main argument for buying an alloy instead if your season starts in March in the north. The method, and the honest case for alloy, is on how to break in a composite bat and alloy vs composite.

| Score | 8.6/10 | 8.6/10 |
Scores are within a tenth of each other and that is the honest result: these are two very similar bats. Buy the one whose published swing-weight behaviour matches your hitter, or the one that is cheaper this week.

How we picked these
Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age
Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
