Best drop 8 USSSA bats for 12U and 13U
A -8 is the bat a travel player moves to when the -10 stops being enough bat and the -5 is still too much. For 13U it is usually not a preference at all: most USSSA 13U play caps the drop at -8, so this is the shelf you are shopping from. Six bats, with each maker's own swing-weight language quoted rather than guessed.

Why a -8 at all
Drop is length minus weight. A 30 in bat at -8 weighs 22 oz; the same length at -10 weighs 20. Two ounces sounds like nothing until a 12-year-old is holding it out in front of him at the end of a tournament Sunday, which is exactly why moving up a drop is a decision and not an upgrade.
A hitter is ready for a -8 when three things are true at once. He can hold the -10 out one-handed for ten seconds without the barrel sinking, he is finishing his swing early rather than late on good velocity, and he is hitting the ball hard but not far. That last one is the real signal: the -10 has stopped limiting his bat speed and started limiting the mass behind the ball. A heavier bat only helps a kid who is already on time.
If any of those is not true, the answer is a longer -10, not a -8. The full method, including the hold test and the length-first rule, is on the youth bat size chart, and what the drop number means in the first place is on bat drop weight explained.
The 13U rule that decides this for you
That rule is why this page exists as its own list. For a 12U hitter a -8 is a choice. For most 13U hitters it is the lightest bat the umpire will let him carry to the plate, and the shopping question changes from “should he move up?” to “which -8 is least punishing?” Those are different questions and they point at different bats: the first is answered by barrel mass, the second by swing weight and sting control.
The division-by-division picture, including the 14U move to BBCOR that catches families out a year later, is on bat rules by age division and when does my kid need a BBCOR bat.
What a -8 actually weighs
Parents compare bats by drop and then get surprised at the scale. The arithmetic is worth having in front of you, because the difference between a 29 in -8 and a 31 in -8 is bigger than the difference between a -10 and a -8 at the same length.
| Length | Weight at -10 | Weight at -8 | Typical hitter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 in | 18 oz | 20 oz | Small 10U moving up early |
| 29 in | 19 oz | 21 oz | 10U to 11U |
| 30 in | 20 oz | 22 oz | 11U to 12U |
| 31 in | 21 oz | 23 oz | 12U to 13U |
| 32 in | 22 oz | 24 oz | 13U, and the step before BBCOR |
A 13U hitter going from a 30 in -10 to a 32 in -8 is picking up four ounces and two inches at once. That is a two-season jump taken in one winter, and it is the most common reason a travel kid's bat speed falls off in the spring. Move the length first, then the drop, and leave a season between them if you can.
How these were ranked
Every bat here carries the USSSA 1.15 BPF mark and is sold in a -8, so certification scores full marks across the board and the order is decided by the remaining rubric axes, with swing weight for the age weighted at 25 percent. Sting control matters more at -8 than it does at -10, because a heavier barrel mis-hit transmits more into the hands, so the two-piece composites rank above the alloys on that axis and the alloys claw it back on durability and value. The published weights are on the methodology page.
Nothing on this page was swung by us. Every construction and swing-weight line is quoted from the maker's own page or, where a maker blocks automated reading, from the retailer listing the buy link points at. Where a maker uses a marketing phrase rather than a number — “Tuned Balance Performance”, “medium load” — we quote the phrase rather than converting it into a figure nobody published.
Composite or alloy at -8
At -10 this argument is mostly about sting. At -8 it is also about the calendar. A composite barrel needs a few hundred controlled swings before it reaches the performance its certification allows, and the makers warn against swinging it cold; a one-piece alloy performs identically on swing one and swing one thousand and has no temperature rule at all.
So the question is when your season starts. If your kid's first -8 arrives in December for a March tournament in a cold state, the alloy is the sane buy and the break-in problem disappears. If he has a garage, a tee and eight weeks, the two-piece composite is the more forgiving bat on the mis-hits a heavier barrel produces. The process itself is on how to break in a composite bat, the trade-off in full on alloy vs composite, and the cold-weather question on composite bats in cold weather.
One thing that does not change with drop: the stamp. A -8 with the USSSA 1.15 BPF thumbprint is not legal in Little League Majors no matter how light it is, and a USA-stamped -8 is not a USSSA bat. If your kid plays both, read USA vs USSSA vs BBCOR before you buy one bat for two leagues, because in most cases you cannot.

Before you buy
- Check your organisation's own drop table for 13U. The -8 cap is the common rule, not a universal one, and tournament hosts sometimes publish their own. One search beats one ejected bat.
- Do not add length and drop in the same purchase. Four extra ounces is a lot of bat for a 13-year-old who was swinging a 30 in -10 in August.
- Buy the drop the kid is ready for, not the one his teammate swings. The hold test takes ten seconds and is the only test that matters here.
- If the season starts cold, buy alloy. No break-in window and no temperature warning, and the money saved covers the tee you would have needed for the break-in.
- Confirm the 1.15 BPF thumbprint on the barrel. A -8 is a drop, not a certification. See how to read a bat stamp.
How we picked these
Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age
Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
