Fastpitch Softball · The picks
Best softball helmets with a mask
In fastpitch, the mask is not optional the way it is in baseball: most leagues require a face guard on a batting helmet, and a lot of teams require it for base runners too. The decision is not whether to get one. It is which size band fits her head, and how much she can see through the bars.

What the rules actually require
Two separate standards apply to a helmet with a mask, and they are certified separately. This matters because a helmet can be legal while the guard someone bolted onto it is not.
Three practical consequences. First, the ball rating is real: a mask rated for 11-inch balls and larger covers fastpitch, which uses a 12-inch ball in most divisions and an 11-inch ball in the youngest. Second, five years is a hard stop — a hand-me-down helmet from a cousin who played in 2019 is out of certification now, regardless of how it looks. Third, if you buy a bare helmet and add a guard later, you need a guard certified to ND072 for that helmet, not whichever cage fits.
Attached cage or bolted-on guard
This is the real design split on this page, and it is the one parents do not know to ask about.
A bolted-on guard is a wire cage attached to a standard batting helmet through existing mounting points. It is cheap, it is replaceable, and it works. Its downsides are a narrower sightline, because the cage was not designed around the shell's opening, and hardware that can work loose over a season. The Easton Alpha, the Alpha 3.0 and the Rawlings Coolflo Highlighter all work this way.
An integrated cage is engineered into the helmet. Rawlings states the Mach Hi-Viz gives a “30% larger viewing window” than traditional helmet-and-facemask combinations, using a stainless-steel cage of “optimized variable thickness” — thicker where it has to be, thinner where the bars sit in a hitter's eyeline. Champro describes its HX Rise Pro similarly, as integrated padding and an included facemask forming one system.
Is the sightline worth double the money? Sometimes, and the test is behavioral rather than technical: if your daughter already wears a caged helmet and keeps pushing it up, tilting her head, or saying she cannot see the ball, the window is the thing to fix and the Mach Hi-Viz is the fix. If she is new to fastpitch and has no complaint, the Alpha gives you the same certifications for half the price and you can spend the difference on a bat that actually fits her.
Sizing: measure before you buy
Helmet fit is not a preference, it is the protection. A helmet that moves when she shakes her head is not doing its job, and one that pinches comes off between innings. Run a soft tape around her head about an inch above the eyebrows and buy to the published range, not to her age.
| Helmet | Size bands the maker publishes |
|---|---|
| Easton Alpha Fastpitch | T-Ball/Small 6 1/4 in - 6 7/8 in · Medium/Large 6 5/8 in - 7 1/4 in · Large/XL 7 1/8 in - 7 3/4 in |
| Champro HX Rise Pro | Small/T-Ball 6 in - 6 1/2 in · Medium/Junior 6 1/2 in - 7 in · Large/Senior 7 in - 7 1/2 in |
| Rawlings Mach Hi-Viz | Junior 6 3/8 in - 7 1/8 in · Senior 6 7/8 in - 7 5/8 in |
| Rawlings Coolflo Highlighter | One size fits most, 6 1/2 in - 7 1/2 in |
| Mizuno F6 Youth | Youth, one size |
Read that table alongside one fact: the Champro Small starts at 6 inches and the Easton T-Ball/Small at 6 1/4 inches, while the Rawlings Coolflo one-size starts at 6 1/2 inches and the Mach Hi-Viz Junior at 6 3/8 inches. For a 6- or 7-year-old in her first 6U or 8U season, that difference decides the purchase — two of these helmets will not fit her at all. Our batting helmet size chart covers the measuring method in more detail.
What we ranked on
These are scored on our published protective rubric, which weights certification highest at 35%, then fit range at 25%, then ventilation and comfort, face-guard compatibility and value. In practice four questions decided the order.
- Does the maker publish the certification, by number? Every helmet sold in the US for this purpose is meant to meet NOCSAE, but the brands differ enormously in whether they tell you which standards and where. Easton prints both ND022 and ND072 on its own product page. Champro states on its own page that the helmet meets the NOCSAE standard. For the Mizuno F6 youth we could find no fetchable maker page stating a number, so it is cited to the Amazon listing only and scored down accordingly. That is a documentation judgment, not a claim that the helmet is unsafe.
- How many size bands, and where do they start? A helmet line that starts at 6 inches serves a 6U player; one that starts at 6 1/2 inches does not. This is why the Alpha and the HX Rise Pro rank above better-built but narrower-fitting helmets.
- Can she see? The sightline through the cage is the most common reason a girl fights her helmet, and it is the one thing the premium pick genuinely buys.
- Venting, for a July doubleheader. Rawlings publishes its 360 Heat Exchange venting with wrapped jaw pads; Champro makes airflow a stated design goal. A hot helmet is a helmet that comes off.
What we did not do: test any of these. We do not own them, we have not struck them with a ball, and nothing on this page is a measurement of ours. The scores are editorial judgments built from published specs, published size tables and published certification claims, every one linked. For the helmets whose makers block automated reads of their own pages, the specs come from the live Amazon listings our buy links point at, read through the Creators API on 2026-10-07.
If you are putting together a first-season kit rather than replacing one piece, start with what your daughter actually needs for softball — the helmet is one line on a longer list, and the differences between softball and baseball gear catch out a lot of families coming over from a brother's baseball bag.
A catcher needs a different helmet from the one she bats in, and a full kit around it. That list, with the NOCSAE certification quoted for every chest protector, is on best youth softball catcher's gear.

What the spec sheet supports
- The widest sightline of any caged helmet here, which is the complaint that makes girls take a mask off
- Cage is engineered into the shell instead of bolted to it, so it does not rattle loose
- Wrapped jaw pads and real venting for August
Where it falls short
- Twice the price of the Easton Alpha and three times the Coolflo
- Only two sizes, so a 7-year-old is not served by it
- Rawlings excludes it from discounts, so it rarely goes on sale

- Mizuno's fastpitch line has a long run in travel ball
- Mask in the box at a mid price
Where it falls short
- One size means no fine fit: a small 8-year-old and a tall 12-year-old get the same shell

What the spec sheet supports
- By far the lowest price for a helmet plus guard together
- Coolflo venting is genuinely good for the money
- Cheap enough to keep a spare in the bag
Where it falls short
- One size fits most starts at 6 1/2 in, so it will not fit a small 6- or 7-year-old
- Guard is a bolted-on wire, with the narrow sightline that implies
- Highlighter colorways fade faster than matte finishes

Before you buy
- Measure her head, then buy the size band. An inch above the eyebrows with a soft tape. Do not buy by age, and do not buy big to last two seasons — a loose helmet is not protection.
- Check the five-year rule on anything handed down. The certified life runs from the date of manufacture, and it is printed inside the shell. A 2019 helmet is out now.
- Buy the helmet and guard together. It is cheaper than buying them separately and it guarantees the combination is a certified one. Adding a guard later means matching an ND072-certified guard to that specific helmet.
- Read your own division's rule on base runners. Some leagues require the mask on the bases as well as at the plate, which changes how many helmets a family needs.
- Have her wear it in the yard before the first game. Ten minutes of swings finds a pressure point that a shop fitting will not.
- Replace it after a real impact. Foam compresses once. A helmet that has taken a solid hit has done its job and should be retired even if it looks fine.
How we picked these
Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age
Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
Corrections & updates
