The height rule
A tee should put the ball in the kid's strike zone, roughly belt to knee, which for a 5-year-old is under two feet off the ground and for a 12-year-old is about 30 inches. That is why the minimum height matters more than the maximum: the Tanner Junior starts at 18 in, the Tanner Youth tees at 20, the JUGS T at 24 and the PowerNet tripod at 27.5. A tee that will not go low enough teaches an uppercut. The makers' ranges are quoted on every card.
Setting the tee is a skill of its own, and moving it front to back matters as much as moving it up and down: how high should a batting tee be covers the belt rule, the three heights worth working, and where the tee sits relative to the plate.

- Minimum height first. Then maximum. A youth tee (20–32 in) covers a 5-year-old and a 12-year-old; an adult tee (26–43 in) does not cover the 5-year-old.
- Flexible top. Tanner's hand-rolled Flextop and JUGS' Always-Feel-The-Ball top let the bat hit the ball, not the tee. Hard cup tops teach kids to hit the tee.
- Replacement parts. Tanner lists them in its comparison table; a top wears out before a stem does. A tee with parts is a ten-year tee.
- Pair it with a net. A tee without a net is a tee that gets used twice. The hitting nets page has the 7×7 that sets up in two minutes; the backyard setup page puts them together.
