How “under $50” was decided
The three tiers
Under $15: stocking stuffers, nothing to size
Glove oil (Glovolium), the glove mallet, and the break-in kit. Any kid with a leather glove uses all three, and the break-in kit is the right gift for the kid who just got a stiff new glove for his birthday. The break-in guide is the note to tuck in the box.
Under $30: batting gloves and bags
Clout batting gloves are the gift every 8-year-old asks for and the one that gets lost by June, so a second pair is never wasted (ask a size). The Youth Players Backpack (8–12) and the T-Ball Backpack (4–7) need no sizing and replace the school bag most kids are hauling gear in. The Players Series 11.5 in is the cheapest real glove on the site that a 9- to 11-year-old can close; it is a spare, not a first glove. The Easton Multi-Adjust jaw guard is the piece parents forget, and it only fits the Easton shells the maker lists, so ask which helmet he has.
Under $50: real gear

Before you wrap it
- Gloves need a hand. Throwing hand and size band: 10–10.5 in for 5–7, 11 in for 7–9, 11.5 in for 9–11. Glove size chart.
- Helmets need a head. Helmet size chart; the CoolFlo Max Youth covers most 7- to 12-year-olds per the maker's sizing.
