Fastpitch Softball · The picks

Best youth softball cleats

Start with the part nobody says out loud: below about a size 6, the major makers do not build a separate softball cleat. The youth molded cleat is the shoe, it is sold for both sports, and the real decision is cushioning, width and closure. Six cleats ranked on those three things, with every spec quoted from the listing.

Is there a softball-specific youth cleat?

That is good news rather than bad. It means the shelf you are shopping from is the much larger baseball shelf, with better availability, better prices and more width options than a softball-only aisle would give you. It also means you can ignore most of what the marketing says and buy on three things: cushioning, width and closure.

Where it does matter is at the top of youth sizing. A 13-year-old who has outgrown Big Kid sizes moves into women's sizing, and at that point softball-specific models become a real option. That is also the age where turf shoes become a second pair rather than a luxury.

What actually differs for a softball player

Four things, none of which are the shoe itself.

  • More standing, less sprinting. A fastpitch infield is tighter and the game is quicker, but a youth player still spends the overwhelming majority of a doubleheader standing still on packed dirt. That is a cushioning problem, which is why the midsole spec leads the ranking here.
  • Sliding. Fastpitch teaches sliding early and the inside of the front foot takes it. A toe-cap overlay or a reinforced medial seam lasts longer; a thin mesh panel there does not.
  • Width. Girls' feet are not narrower as a rule, but the youth cleat lasts most commonly reported to run narrow — New Balance and Nike — are also the two most bought. The retailer note on the New Balance line is explicit about it.
  • Pitching, if she pitches. A fastpitch pitcher drags her back foot through every delivery, and the toe of that shoe is the first thing on any cleat to fail. A toe guard is a cheap fix and a sensible one.

Metal cleats and fastpitch

Molded is the right answer for every player on this page, and in most youth divisions it is the only legal answer. Little League's own help centre addresses metal spikes directly, and the practical effect across youth baseball and softball is that metal is barred below a stated level of play and permitted only in the older divisions.

Rules differ by organisation and some fastpitch sanctioning bodies allow metal earlier than others, so check the one your daughter actually plays under before you buy anything with a steel stud. For a 12U player the question almost never arises: buy molded, and buy it in rubber or TPU. The full picture is on molded vs metal cleats.

How these were ranked

The cleat rubric weights fit and closure for kids at 30 per cent, cushioning at 20, traction type for the age at 20, durability at 15 and value at 15. On this page traction is effectively level — every pick is molded and legal — so cushioning and fit are doing the work, and that is exactly the right weighting for a player who stands more than she sprints.

Every spec is quoted from the maker or the retailer listing the buy link points at. We have not worn any of these. Where a retailer publishes a sizing warning — and New Balance's does — we carry it rather than burying it, because a correctly ranked cleat in the wrong width is a returned cleat. The weights are on the methodology page.

One deliberate exclusion: turf shoes. They are a second pair for cage and practice work rather than a game cleat, and they are ranked separately on best youth turf shoes.

Fit: the part that decides it

A cleat that is correctly ranked and incorrectly sized is a bad cleat. Three rules, all of which apply more strongly to the two most popular brands here.

RuleWhy
Order a half size up if you cannot try them onThe retailer note on New Balance says the cleats can run smaller and narrower than a standard athletic shoe
Fit in the afternoon, in the socks she plays inFeet swell through the day, and softball socks are thicker than everyday socks
Leave a thumb's width at the toeA cleat fitted exactly is outgrown by midseason
Check the closure, not just the lengthA player who cannot tie laces quickly needs a cleat she can get on and off in a dugout

If your daughter has wide feet, start from the wide-foot list instead of from this ranking — the two best-cushioned picks here are the two most often reported narrow. That list is on best youth cleats for wide feet, and the sizing method, including the Little Kid to Big Kid transition, is on youth cleat sizing guide.

Before you buy

  • Molded, always, unless your organisation explicitly allows metal at her age. Most youth divisions do not.
  • Buy for the midsole. She stands far more than she runs, and the cleats that publish a full-length midsole are the ones that are still comfortable in the third game of a Saturday.
  • Half a size up, in the socks she plays in. The sizing warning on the most popular line here is the retailer's own.
  • Do not pay for a softball-specific label in youth sizes. It does not exist below about a women's 6; the molded youth cleat is the shoe for both sports.
  • If she pitches, budget a toe guard. The drag toe is the first part of any cleat to go.

How we picked these

Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age

Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked

What are the best youth softball cleats?
The New Balance 4040v8, for the full-length FuelCell midsole — the one published spec that matters for a player who stands on dirt for hours. The Under Armour Leadoff Low RM Jr is the budget pick and lists an EVA midsole and a padded collar.
Are softball cleats different from baseball cleats?
Not in youth sizes. Softball-specific models appear from about a women's 6 upward; below that the major makers sell one molded youth cleat listed for baseball, T-ball and softball alike.
Can a girl wear baseball cleats for softball?
Yes, and at youth sizes that is what nearly everyone is wearing. The molded youth cleat is the same shoe; the colourway is the difference.
Are metal cleats allowed in youth softball?
Usually not below the older divisions. Little League addresses metal spikes directly and most youth organisations bar them below a stated level of play. Check your own organisation's rule, and buy molded for a 12U player.
What are the most comfortable softball cleats for a kid?
The ones with a real midsole. The 4040v8 publishes a full-length FuelCell and the Leadoff Low RM Jr an EVA midsole with a padded collar and heel. Comfort in a cleat is cushioning plus correct width, in that order.
Do youth softball cleats run small?
The two most popular lines do. The retailer note on New Balance says its cleats can run a little smaller and narrower than a standard athletic shoe and suggests a half size up; Nike youth lasts are also commonly reported narrow.
