Youth baseball pants: what to buy, in what size, and why

Pants are the only piece of gear your kid wears every single inning, the cheapest thing in the bag, and the item most likely to be wrong on the first try. The team tells you a color and a style and nothing else. This guide fills in the rest: the two cuts, the two hems, how to size a pant for a kid who is growing, and what actually tears.

Ask the coach two questions first

Before you open a single product page, send the coach or the team manager two questions: what color, and knicker or full length. Under Armour's own buying guide ends on the same note — check with your league and coach that the style and color match the uniform requirement. Those two answers eliminate about ninety percent of the listings, and getting them wrong is the single most common reason a parent buys baseball pants twice in one spring.

If the team has not decided, buy gray. Gray is the color most rec leagues default to, it hides a dirt infield better than white, and it is the pant you can keep using next season when the jersey changes.

Knicker or full length

There are two cuts and the difference is where the leg stops.

CutWhere it endsNeedsBest for
Full lengthAt the ankle, over the cleatNothing elseRec ball, cold spring evenings, a kid who slides
KnickerAt or just below the kneeOver-the-calf socks, every gameTravel teams that want a matching look

Under Armour's guide describes the knicker exactly that way: a shorter pant with an elastic hem that sits at or just below the knee, worn with socks that cover the rest. A knicker is cooler in July and it can be worn a little higher as a kid grows, which stretches its useful life. It also leaves the shin bare, needs a second purchase you will be replacing all season, and looks wrong at a rec game where everybody else is in full length.

Open hem or elastic hem

Full-length pants come two ways, and the listings do not always make it obvious which one you are looking at. Under Armour's guide names both: a closed elastic hem that gathers around the ankle, and an open hem that sits on top of the cleats like the bottom of ordinary trousers.

  • Open hem (open bottom). The usual youth-uniform look. Easiest to pull on over a cleat, and the one most team orders specify. It drags in mud and it frays at the heel first.
  • Closed or elastic hem. Gathers at the ankle, stays out of the dirt, and reads as a slightly older style. Harder to get over a cleat when a 7-year-old is doing it himself in the parking lot.
  • Tapered bottom. A narrowed open hem, sold as a separate listing by most brands. It looks sharper and it is the fastest to outgrow, because the taper is where a growing calf runs out of room.

One practical note: on Amazon the open-bottom and tapered-bottom versions of the same pant are usually two different listings with nearly identical names and different prices. Read the title to the end before you order.

Sizing a pant for a kid who is growing

Youth baseball pants are sold in letter sizes — Under Armour's guide puts the range at YXS to YXL — and the letters do not mean the same thing from brand to brand. Size from two measurements instead of from an age:

  1. Waist. Measure around the natural waist where a belt would sit, not over the hips. Most youth pants have an elastic or gripper waistband with belt loops, so a half inch either way is forgivable; two inches is not.
  2. Inseam. Measure from the crotch to the top of the ankle bone with the kid standing in socks. For a knicker, measure to just below the knee instead.

Then read the brand's own size chart on the listing you are about to buy. A "Youth Large" from one maker can be a full size off another maker's Large, which is exactly why ordering by the letter your kid wore last year is how parents end up with a pant that bags at the knee.

Fabric, weight and what it means on a dirt infield

Under Armour's guide puts it plainly: most baseball pants are 100% polyester, because polyester is flexible, breathable and durable, and the priority is a fabric that wicks sweat and dries fast. That is the whole fabric decision for a youth player. Cotton-blend pants exist, hold water, dry slowly and stay cold — skip them.

Where brands differ is weight and stretch, usually stated as a cloth number or an ounce weight and as two-way or four-way stretch. Heavier fabric lasts longer and breathes less; four-way stretch moves better in a squat. Those numbers are published inconsistently across youth lines, so treat them as a tiebreaker between two pants you already like rather than the thing you shop on. Where a pant on this page does not publish a weight, we have not guessed one.

What actually wears out

In order, on a youth pant: the knees, then the seat, then the heel of the hem, and only then anything else. Everything a pant maker charges extra for is aimed at one of those three places — a double-ply knee panel, a reinforced sliding seat, a tapered or elastic hem that keeps the fabric off the ground.

Whether your kid needs any of it depends almost entirely on one thing: does he slide? A 7-year-old in coach pitch mostly does not, and a plain pant will outlast his legs. A 10-year-old stealing bases on a dirt infield will go through the knees of a plain pant in a season, and the reinforced pant is cheaper than the second plain pant.

Sliding shorts are the other half of this and they belong under the pant from about 8 upward — we cover those, along with cups, on youth cups and sliding shorts.

How many pairs a season needs

One pair works only if your schedule has a day between games and somebody does laundry on it. The realistic answer for a rec season is two of the game color; for travel ball with Saturday doubleheaders and a Sunday bracket, two game pairs plus an old pair for practice. Practice pants do not need to match anything, which makes last season's outgrown-but-intact pair genuinely useful right up until it is not.

At rec-league prices a second pair is a small line in the season budget. We put the whole number together on what a season of youth baseball costs, and the full list of what to buy before opening day is on the youth baseball equipment checklist.

Four youth pants that fit the brief

All four are sold in youth sizes and all four are in stock as of 14 October 2026. Prices move constantly on apparel and every size and color is usually its own listing, so the button on each card shows what that exact listing costs today rather than a number we typed last month.

Scoring for these follows the apparel rubric published on the methodology page: fit on a growing kid, durability at the knees and seat, fabric and stretch as published, and value. Fit carries the most weight because it is the thing that decides whether a pant gets worn or replaced.

Washing them so they survive

Under Armour's guide gives the care rule for polyester pants: machine wash cold, no fabric softener, no dry cleaning, no iron. Fabric softener coats the fiber and kills the wicking that is the reason you bought polyester. Heat is worse — a hot dryer sets a grass stain permanently and can shrink a hem out of true.

  • Rinse the dirt off with a hose before the pants go in the basket, not after they have dried into the knee.
  • Wash cold, inside out, with the belt removed.
  • Hang them to dry. They are polyester; they will be dry by morning.
  • Treat grass before the first wash, because the first hot cycle is the one that locks it in.

How we picked these

Researched, certification-checked and sized for the age

Every pick on this page earns its place the same way: the certification is checked against the governing bodies' rules and the maker's stated stamp, so the gear is legal for the division it is bought for; sizing comes from the makers' own age, height and hand charts; the published specs (drop, barrel, construction, closure, cleat type) are read from the maker's page; and the patterns in verified buyer reviews sharpen the “best for” line on each card. Every figure links to where it came from, with the date.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, applied with the same weights to every product in a category, so the ranking is comparable top to bottom. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked

What size baseball pants should I buy for my kid?
Size from a waist measurement and an inseam measurement, then read the size chart on the listing you are buying. Youth pants run YXS to YXL and the letters are not consistent between brands, so last year's size in another brand is a guess. One size up for room to grow is fine; two is a trip hazard.
Do youth baseball pants come in knickers or full length?
Both. Full length ends at the ankle over the cleat; a knicker ends at or just below the knee and is worn with over-the-calf socks. Rec leagues almost always wear full length. Buy knickers only if the team asks for them.
What is the difference between an open bottom and an elastic bottom?
An open bottom hangs straight over the cleat like ordinary trousers; an elastic (closed) bottom gathers at the ankle. Open bottom is the standard youth-uniform look and the easiest to pull over a cleat. Elastic stays out of the mud. A tapered bottom is a narrowed open hem and is usually a separate listing.
Are white or gray baseball pants better for youth?
Gray, unless the team specifies white. Gray hides a dirt infield, survives a bad wash, and is the color most rec leagues default to, so it is the pair most likely to still be usable next season.
How many pairs of baseball pants does a kid need?
Two of the game color for a rec season, because one pair only works if there is a laundry day between games. Travel ball with doubleheaders wants two game pairs plus an old pair for practice.
Can you wash baseball pants in hot water?
No. Wash cold, skip the fabric softener, and hang them to dry. Hot water and a hot dryer set grass stains permanently and fabric softener kills the wicking in polyester, which is the reason the pant is polyester in the first place.
Do kids need sliding shorts under baseball pants?
From roughly age 8, when sliding starts in earnest, yes — sliding shorts save skin that a single layer of polyester does not. See youth cups and sliding shorts for what goes under the pant and at what age.
